This was fun, and gave me a chance to do something at least a little
challenging. Danielle followed, but got stuck at the final right-slanting
crack (which was a bit tricky), and was too tired to finish. I lowered her,
and Kyle came up. As he rapped off my anchor, I cleaned up the fixed anchor at
the summit of Willit Pillar. There were two or three bolts, and four really
long pieces of 1” tubular webbing to allow the anchor to be extended in
various directions. The webbing was even in pretty good condition. The problem
was that there was only one rap ring, attached to only one of the pieces of
webbing, which was in turn attached to only one of the bolts! I took the rap
ring I always carry on my self-rescue kit and decided to donate it to Joshua
Tree. Before I rapped down, all four pieces of tat and all the bolts were in
use and reasonably well equalized, with some good redundancy built in.
