Metolius Bomb Shelter Fly

  • Metolius Bomb Shelter Fly, Double
    • Purchased: Friday, May 6, 2005
This is the fly that goes with my ledge. Metolius apparently contracted out the design and manufacture of these things to Mountain Hardwear, which is very confidence-inspiring. This thing looks so bomb-proof that I almost want to get caught out in a storm with it.
    • Damaged: Around Thursday, September 8, 2005
My fly got a little damage on its very first wall! Hauling it up thirty pitches of granite on the Nose wore a few holes through the stuff sack, and one hole right through the fly itself. Apparently the proper way to haul the fly is to compress it down really thin (that's why the stuff sack is a compression sack) and put it inside the (sturdy vinyl-clad) portaledge bag.
    • Repaired: Around Friday, September 30, 2005
I sent my portaledge fly in to Metolius, and they patched the holes in the stuff sack and the fly itself. For the fly, they just sewed on a patch, but they gave me a tube of seam-sealer with which to finish the job. I thoroughly sealed the patch, and I now believe the fly is back to its bomb-proof status.
