Chouinard Hexcentric

  • Chouinard Hexcentric, #9
    • Bootied: Wednesday, August 25, 2004
I bootied this just past the crux on Whodunit. It's very old, but so what... it's a big hex. I haven't actually used it yet, but I wouldn't be opposed to using it. The sling appears to be fairly new and in good condition. I was very proud of my ability to get this thing out. It was wedged pretty good in this crack/hole just above the crux moves on the [traditionally third] pitch of Whodunit at Tahquitz. I saw the sling hanging out of the hole, but couldn't reach the hex, even with my nut tool. After a minute or two, I realized that the hole above where the sling was coming out was part of the same crack, so I reached in that hole, and was finally able to reach the hex with my nut tool. Of course, I still couldn't get it out, but I was at least able to pull the sling up. I was about to give up, but as a last ditch effort, I tried giving the sling a sharp tug in this new upward direction, and to my surprise and delight, the hex popped free! I then merely finessed it out through the larger upper hole.
