Me hauling pitch 9

Notice that in this picture Aaron is already at the anchor above me, and the pigs are still far enough below me that they're not in the picture. It was taking me forever to haul them.

As the pigs finally approached the anchor, I heard Aaron shout, and I looked up to see him pointing at the top of the haul bags. I looked, and was immediately scared by what I saw. The shiny new Petzl Swivel had cross-loaded the haul bag's main locking carabiner, just as I had noticed that it might on the previous pitch. I had forgotten to mention to Aaron that this might happen, and he hadn't noticed when he released the pigs from the previous anchor. The weight of the bags had broken the biner's locking sheath, and the gate of the biner was wide open, with the swivel still across it. Essentially, the whole massive weight of our pigs was hanging across the wide-open gate of a carabiner. Scary. We had probably just come pretty close to losing the pigs completely. We carefully docked the pigs to the anchor and closed the biner, and Aaron pointed out that if we had put the swivel on right-side-up, this couldn't have happened. We resolved to fix it when we got to the next ledge, at the top of Dolt Tower, and in the mean time to keep a close eye on it each time we released the pigs. I also insisted that we eat lunch on Dolt Tower, since I was becoming convinced that lack of food was part of the reason for my struggling and general low morale.

Aaron got ready to start leading pitch 10. From the topo, it seemed like it might be possible to link this with pitch 11, taking us all the way to the top of Dolt Tower, and the end of the beautiful Stoveleg cracks. Since pitch 11 was another offwidth, albeit a short one, I told Aaron to try the linkup if he thought he could. At that point I really didn't want to go through another hellish wide crack. Aaron took off, and fortunately for me, he was able to link the two pitches. He free climbed most of pitch 10, but switched to aid for pitch 11. After I had jugged to the top of Dolt Tower and he had hauled the pigs, I helped him drag the beasts up onto the ledge. Then we rested for a little while, ate our lunches (our usual bagel sandwiches, with cheese and pepperoni), and attached the swivel to the haul bags correctly.
